The Department is responsible for the formulation of national energy policy and strategic plans and as chairman of the national energy committee; coordinates the activities of the various actors in the energy sector; formulate national energy policy and master plan; Assessment of hydro-power sites across the country. The sub sectors over which it has oversight responsibility include electricity/power, upstream petroleum activities; renewable energy such as hydro-power wind, solar systems and biomass. The Department also work along with the national oil company of Liberia in the promotion, grant and monitoring of the country's petroleum exploration blocks and program.
