Monday, December 5, 2024 / Monrovia, Liberia: The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has announced an immediate suspension of all mining activities, including prospecting, reconnaissance, and exploration, in and around Ben-Ben Town, Todee Statutory District, Montserrado County.

This directive follows a recent violent incident in the area that resulted in loss of life. In a statement signed by Hon. Carlos Edison Tingban, Assistant Minister for Mines, the decision prioritizes public safety, peace, and order over mining operations.

While acknowledging the rights of legitimate license holders affected by this temporary measure, the Ministry emphasized the need to create a secure and stable environment. "This move is intended to allow the Liberia National Police and other relevant security agencies to continue their efforts to restore total calm," the statement read.

To ensure compliance, the Ministry has directed its Regional Coordinator, Mining Agent, and Inspectors in rural Montserrado to enforce this directive. The ban highlights the Ministry's commitment to maintaining safety and order in mining communities and reflects the government’s determination to address conflicts in resource-rich areas.

The Ministry urges all stakeholders to adhere to the directive as authorities work toward resolving the crisis. The announcement has also been communicated to Hon. Wilmot J.M. Paye, Minister of Mines and Energy, for oversight and coordination.
