Ministry of Mines & Energy Liberia
April 7, 2025-MONROVIA: As Energy Sector Lead, Mines and Energy Minister, Wilmot Paye, has assured the new ‘acting’ Management Team of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), of the Ministry’s support and cooperation as the new administration of the Country’s power utility took office on April 7, 2025.
Speaking on Minister Paye's behalf, the Deputy Minister for Energy, Charles Umehai, welcomed the new LEC Management headed by Mohammed Sheriff.
Managing Director Sheriff and his team of deputies are ‘acting’, awaiting Senate confirmation. Deputy Minister Umehai said during the brief induction ceremony held at the LEC’s central office in Monrovia that the Ministry remains committed to working in collaboration with the Board to ensure the Management is on course with achieving Liberia's quest for sustainable, affordable and efficient power production and supply to stimulate economic growth and promote national development.
New Acting LEC MD Sheriff sounded confident and ready to get the job done, informing the nation at his induction program that he, along with the Board of LEC headed by Cllr. Emmanuel Tulay, will shortly sign a 30 megawatt power supply agreement with the Republic of Guinea to scale up the existing 50 megawatt Liberia receives from the Ivory Coast.
Another interesting highlight of the LEC Management induction ceremony was that in his turnover notes, former interim head of the national power utility from December 2024 - March 2025, Thomas Gonkerwon, who now serves as Acting Deputy Managing Director for Operations under the Sheriff-led Management, reported a progress made in reducing economic loss due to power-theft from 37% to now 23%.
The LEC new Boss spoke briefly but it was a short speech full of positive goals mainly in terms of this new management working assiduously in making sure Liberia achieves zero power outage, and zero load shedding; that is, switching between communities to make electricity available, something he frowned at.
