April 21, 2025-MONROVIA: The Ministry of Mines and Energy through the Department of Mines and Exploration has trained a new ‘Boat Operator’ for the Liberia Hydrological Service aimed at capacitating the LHS in carrying out its functions of collecting and distributing water resources information that leads to informed decision making in terms of water related development that includes flooding preparedness, drainage design, hydropower generation, and agricultural purposes, among others.
The training of the Boat Operator was part of a two-day training exercise undertaken by the Liberia Hydrological Service (LHS), headed by Wynitta Gwaikolo-Mayson. Director Mayson and staff of the LHS conducted day one activities of the training indoor at the central office of the Mines and Energy Ministry, while day two activities were conducted in the field.
During the field exercises, LHS Water Engineers and Technicians were drilled through important areas such as water level measurement using the staff gauge and tripod which is a surveying instrument, and the discharge measurement using the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The ADCP is an instrument that uses soundwave to measure the velocity and discharge or flow of rivers.
Mines and Energy staff in the Liberia Hydrological Service were also trained on methods of processing hydrological data collected from the field. At the close of the two-day water quality management training, LHS Director Wynitta Gwaikolo-Mayson expressed appreciation to the senior management team of the Ministry of Mines and Energy for providing the training opportunity and said given the significance of water resources to national development, it would be important to conduct such trainings periodically.
The training ran from April 17 - 18, 2025.
