MONROVIA – MAY 20, 2026: The Technical Committee, and Transaction Advisor working for the progress of the 200megawatts Independent Power Producer solar energy project in Liberia have provided updates to the Minister of Mines and Energy, R. Matenokay Tingban about the status of their work.
The technical discussions took place Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the head-office of the Mines and Energy Ministry on Capitol Hill, Monrovia, also attended by the World Bank which is supporting preparatory activities of the Solar IPP project with Two Million United States Dollars.
Out of the 200megawatts the Solar IPP project is expected to produce, 100megawatts will be made available for evacuation into the CLSG Transco sub-station in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County to scale up the output of power that facility generates, while 100megawatts will feed into the CLSG Transco sub-station in Senkipa, Nimba County.
The technical working group informed Minister Tingban that significant progress has been made in the rollout plan and methodology of the solar power project, and commended all actors involved with the process including the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), Liberia Land Authority (LLA), the Ministry of Local Government (MLG), and the sector lead – Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME).
The team assured the Mines and Energy Minister that their hands will remain on deck in working collaboration to see the project’s implementation fully achieved according to the timeline. Minister R. Matenokay Tingban lauded efforts the Technical Committee, and the Transaction Advisor have made thus far in taking the preparatory and planning stages of the Solar energy IPP project to appreciable levels. The Minister admonished the team to remain focused and committed to the task of ensuring that the project meets full completion to increase the supply and availability of sustainable and affordable electricity in Liberia to drive economic growth and national development.
The Minister told the visiting World Bank delegation at his office that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., is highly interested in solving the electricity gaps the Country is experiencing and called on them to communicate to the Ministry for further Executive Mansion intervention, challenges along the way that may cause delay in achieving the project’s timeline.
The construction of the solar power facilities in Buchanan, and Senkipa, forms an integral part of broader reform efforts by the Liberian Government to address issues of power outages due to low generation as the Country’s main source of electric power remains the seasonal Mount Coffee hydro power plant in White Plains, Montserrado County. The Deputy Minister for Energy, Charles Umehai, and Energy Department Technicians also contributed technical details during the discussions.
