Hon. Charles Umehai is the Deputy Minister for Energy at the Ministry of Mines and Energy of the Republic of Liberia. He spearheads the Department of Energy, whose mandate is to carry out the energy functions of Liberia.

 

The department’s functions include:
• Formulation of energy policies;
• Development of Liberia Energy Master Plan;
• Oversight responsibility of the renewable energy sector and monitoring of their implementations.

Honorable Charles Umehai has over 18 years of experience and firm professional background in exploration geology, mining and environment.

 

Prior to becoming Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Umehai served as Principal Geologist for BHP Billiton West Africa, Superintendent for Quality Control at ArcelorMittal Liberia, and Acting Head of Department for Technical services at ArcelorMittal Liberia.


Deputy Minister Umehai holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Regional Planning from the University of Liberia, a bachelor’s degree in Geology from Delta State University in Nigeria, and professional training in power facilities planning from China, backed by other professional knowledge acquired over the years.

 

He is committed to ensuring access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy nationwide and leveraging private sector participation in the energy sector of Liberia.
